The Dongxiang are a Mongolic people belonging to the Eastern branch. They live mainly in the Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, and Xinjiang provinces (Also called Eastern Turkistan by Turks). They are believed to be descendants of Mongolian troops stationed in North Eastern China during the rule of Genghis Khan (1162-1227 AD). They settled and mixed with Han Chinese, Tibetans and Mongolian groups. In the 13th century due to contract with Muslim Central Asian peoples the Dongxiang converted to Islam. Along with close cousin the Bonans they make up the two largest Mongolic Muslim groups. Dongxiangs are not nomadic and farming is common in their lifestlye. [1]
